Ulla von Brandenburg is considered one of Germany’s most innovative contemporary artists. Ulla von Brandenburg’s practice is inspired by a wide range of historical elements, many reverting back to the late 19th-centruy, sourced from literature, the visual arts, expressionist theatre, Hollywood films as well as pre-Freudian psychoanalysis.
The works are very manifold regarding materials and mediums (drawings, silhouettes, water color drawings, wall paintings and works with fabrics, performances and films). Very often, she refers to elder conventions of presentation, in which expressivity and theatricality are formulated.
Amongst other things, ribbons are a central reoccurring theme in the artist’s work. They do not only symbolize the tradition of using ribbons in connection with farewells but also refer to their function as a form of linking different things together as in Schlauch, which means hose in English, two different colored canvas ribbons rolled together on a wall.
