A student at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna until 1990, Hugo Markl draws directly on his everyday life to create his works. He transforms impressions and materials that captivate and puzzle him by reconstituting them in the form of videos, sculptures, drawings and various assemblages. Ghostsheets is a multi-piece series of single works, each of which consists of four coloured pencil drawings on paper put together in one frame. These designs are variations of linear colour experiments and rhythmic compositions. The regular ordering, which assembles simple horizontal and vertical lines in different colours, is disrupted by trembling and bending bands, which spoil the decorative and minimalist effect. This experimental work seeks to assign arbitrarily determined combinations of lines and colours to the sounds and noises naturally filling the space during the creative process. This could be defined as an “acoustic-graphic work of translation”, which can be understood subjectively as well as individually.
