Lives and works in Mumbai, India

Shilpa Gupta, who graduated from the Sir J. J. School of Fine Arts in Mumbai in 1997, works on the perception of images and their effects on the spectator through the use of videos, performances, objects, photographs, installations or digital art, often interactive. Concerned by what we are looking at and how, her artistic research is oriented towards the ways of interpreting information and the misunderstandings they bring in a highly mediated world. The artist explores the influences of politics and cultures on the construction of our identities and questions our perceptions through her work, which can be appreciated on several different levels.

2652-2 is a diptych of almost abstract photographs, which are made out of rows of small pictures. The artist shot one picture of the sky and one picture of the ground at each step that led her from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to the Western Wall and the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Two thousand six hundred and fifty two steps and photographs, which gave the work its title. These three monuments, which she linked in her walk and with the camera through very realistic shots of the metaphysical earth and the heavens, are the holiest sites of the three monotheist religions that have had an endless history of dialogue and conflict.
